The RELAY MEETING 2012
Start out with a trio, consisting of musicians that have never previously performed together in this specific constellation. Over the course of three festivals the trio evolves to a quartet and finally into a quintet. The musical content relies on improvisation with additional passages of written music. What you’ve got here is the concept behind the RELAY MEETING 2012.

For the last two editions of the GAS-festival the MEETING concept has been an integral part. In 2010 we hosted a concert in a large fish market in Gothenburg and during 2011, the entire evening on May 7th consisted of a massive, thirteen musician strong ensemble concert. Once again it’s time to push the envelope in presenting the RELAY MEETING 2012.

We want to investigate what happens to a musical constellation, albeit a makeshift one, when new musicians and instruments are introduced to the context. Will the original musicians have to rethink what they’ve previously done? Will they be forced to find structure or perhaps let loose even more so that everyone can find their own respective place in this constantly shifting constellation? What happens to the musical content? Will the group get louder and louder or will it be forced to play extremely quiet and tentative in order to give both the musicians and the music space? Can this be controlled? And would it really gain from being controlled?

Danish percussionist and composer Lisbeth Diers has been appointed Artistic Director for the RELAY MEETING 2012 and has, in dialogue with GAS, put together the line-up for the concept. Lisbeth will also be performing on all three occasions as part of the initial trio constellation.

This is a unique opportunity to see some of the finest Nordic improvisers around, performing together in the same room. The concerts will also be preceded by open rehearsals, where you, the audience, will be able to gain an insight into the creative process involved in creating and developing a concept like this.
